I ran this tour for the first time in 2016 and was very impressed by the beauty of the Prairies in the springtime with the wondrously green grasslands rippling away to the horizon.

At this time of the year the Prairies are extremely birdy with the wetlands populated with many species including pelicans and ibis, avocets and the endangered Piping Plover. The grasslands are home to special birds such as Long-billed Curlew, Loggerhead Shrike, Sprague’s Pipit, Bobolink and longspurs, while numerous species of raptor patrol the skies. We encounter a variety of mammals including bison, pronghorn, badger and black-tailed
prairie-dog. In 2016 we found a burrowing owl in a prairie-dog colony at Grasslands National Park, a highlight of the tour. Dinosaurs are an important part of the Prairie culture and we visit the world famous Royal Tyrell Museum in Drumheller, Alberta.

Other historical and cultural destinations on the tour include Head-Smashed-in-Buffalo-Jump, Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park and Dinosaur Provincial Park in Alberta, and the Cypress Hills and Grasslands National Park in Saskatchewan.

The tour begins and ends in Calgary.
