YUKON CALLING!

I have frequently been requested to offer a tour to the Dempster Highway in the fall (late August, early September at this latitude) to view the tundra as it turns red and mauve, orange and gold, with maybe a skiff of fresh snow on the mountaintops. A typical quote at this time of the year goes.....” the colours of the tundra in the Fall will leave you speechless - except to continually be saying 'WOW” . Also, at this time of year, the 120,000 strong Porcupine caribou herd begins to return to winter along the Dempster Highway from the calving grounds on the Arctic Plain. It is also the best time of the year to observe grizzly bears on the Dempster.

The Dempster Highway, runs from Dawson City, Yukon, to Inuvik, NWT and is 750 kms of good gravel. It is the only road in Canada that extends north of the Arctic Circle. Along its route it crosses three mountain ranges, traverses wild river valleys, muskeg and tundra, and at latitude 66 33’N it crosses the Arctic Circle, We will spend 3 days on the Dempster and drive as far as the Richardson Mountains, just north of the Arctic Circle, spending a whole day exploring this most scenic section of the highway.

We will be in Dawson City, home of the famed 1898 Klondike Gold Rush, for 3 nights, and there will be time to soak up the atmosphere of this historic town. We will also drive Top of the World Highway, an extraordinarily scenic road close to Dawson City.
